Article: Santos wins appeal `Avalanche of errors' leads to new trial

Former City Treasurer Miriam Santos was buried by a "veritable
avalanche of errors" committed by the judge presiding over her
extortion trial, an appeals court ruled today in reversing Santos'
conviction and ordering a new trial with a new judge.
Attorneys for Santos were expected to appear before a federal
judge on emergency duty this afternoon to seek an order releasing
Santos, 44, from a women's prison in Downstate Pekin.
Santos is expected to remain free pending a new trial. U.S.
Attorney Scott Lassar did not immediately say today whether his
office would retry the case, although a spokesman for Lassar said a
new trial is likely "if it's ultimately necessary."
