His name isn't on the ballot in the 47th Ward.
But Ald. Richard F. Mell (33rd) is looking to settle an old score
in the contest for Democratic ward committeeman in the Northwest Side
ward that includes most of Ravenswood and North Center.
Former Chicago Park Supt. Edmund L. Kelly, who has been the 47th
Ward's committeeman for 32 years, thwarted Mell in 1990 when Mell
sought to become chairman of the Cook County Democratic Central
Committee. For more than two decades, Kelly has served as the North
Side's unofficial Democratic chairman and also has presided over
countywide slatemaking. Kelly's allies chose Thomas G. Lyons over
Mell for party chairman in 1990.
