Article: Professional student NU undergrad starts his own advertising firm

Todd Kaplan, a Northwestern University economics major, couldn't find classes he liked in marketing or advertising.

So he opened AdShop on Nov. 1, 1998, a not-for-profit advertising agency on the campus to learn by doing.

"I wanted to get real-life experience in running an advertising agency," said Kaplan, now a 21-year-old senior.

"I have always loved advertising," Kaplan said. "I have a passion for marketing and what makes the consumers tick."

The AdShop founder and president has more than 20 students working as graphic designers, copywriters, account executives, marketing analysts and media planners.
