When a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop opened in the Van Nuys district
of Los Angeles last year, half a dozen TV stations sent crews to film
the event. Newspapers and magazines printed rave reviews. "A famous
deep-fried Southern sin has come West," gushed the Los Angeles Times.
Could a company ask for more? If it's Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corp.,
it doesn't have to. Shortly before a Krispy Kreme shop opened in a
suburb of Phoenix last year, a public-relations aide to Sheriff Joe
Arpaio of Arizona's Maricopa County asked whether the sheriff could
be the first customer. Krispy Kreme gladly obliged Arpaio, who bills
himself as "the toughest sheriff in America" and has become a local
celebrity by ...
