Article: `Pop song' defined by what flavor you like

Jim: I'm not sure if you can answer this, but I'll give it a shot. After a music discussion with a friend, we tried to determine what makes a "pop" song, with regards to structure and form and not necessarily popularity.

We debated whether songs from various musical genres (rock, grunge, etc.) could be classified as pop songs. "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? "Sweet Jane"? "She Loves You"?

Are there elements that must be in a song to consider it a pop song and not (say) free jazz? My musical pride is riding on this.
