More than 170,000 Chicago public school students in grades K-7
will get workbooks, lesson plans and reading materials to take home
over the summer, under a $2.7 million program meant to fight "summer
slippage." The "Step Ahead" program is aimed at students who aren't
required to attend mandatory summer school programs.
