Because planning for Noise Pop Chicago-an offshoot of the established San Francisco rock festival-began only a few months ago, it's no surprise that the event was lacking in musical cohesion (witness the awkward attempt to lump the Empty Bottle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music under the Noise Pop umbrella), basic logistics (no discounted festival passes were sold), and real marquee attraction (the biggest rock show of the weekend was Patti Smith's non-Noise Pop appearance).

That said, indie-rock fans couldn't have hoped for a better lineup than the trio of bands that topped Thursday, Friday and Saturday's festival bills: the Apples in Stereo, Sleater-Kinney and Modest Mouse.
