If opening lines truly made sparks, Fred Hoffmann would have burned out a long time ago.

The former Cook County deputy sheriff is founder of the Snuggery chain, the big shooter of the Chicago and suburban singles scene during the 1970s and '80s.

Hoffmann, 55, moved on to open the mammoth Excalibur nightclub in the former Limelight location at 632 N. Dearborn, as well as several Alumni Clubs, Magnum's Prime Steakhouses and the Fuel "restaubar" in Wrigleyville.

As president of Ala Carte Entertainment, based in quaint Edison Park, Hoffmann now oversees 25 restaurants and nightclubs in the Chicago area.
