Cadbury Schweppes PLC, the world's No. 4 confectioner, said it is
in talks with Philip Morris Cos. about buying its French candy and
chewing gum business. The unit, now operated by Philip Morris's Kraft
foods subsidiary, based in Northfield, generated revenue of $171
million in 1999. The companies must consult with works councils
before the agreement can be completed. London-based Cadbury has
said it wants to expand its confectionery business, which includes
Dairy Milk chocolate bars. The company said this month it was
interested in buying some of Nabisco Holdings Corp.'s food
businesses.
