A good home inspector could save your life, not to mention time, money and aggravation. We asked Stuart Zwang, general manager of Home Raters Inc. of Highwood, what buyers can expect from a home inspection on a newly built house.

He asks that buyers bring plans and specifications with them to the inspection so he can determine whether the builder did what he said he was going to do.

In the two to four hours that a quality inspector budgets for a single-family detached home, Zwang will inspect the heating, plumbing, electrical, roof, structure, foundation, air conditioning and the appliances if they are part of the package.

"We have a 10-page, 200-item check list," Zwang said.
