Article: Columbia College chief near tops in pay

Columbia College may not have the money or academic clout of schools such as Northwestern University or the University of Chicago, but when it comes to its president's pay, the smaller school nearly matched its elite competitors.

Columbia's John Duff made $400,000 in the 1998-99 school year, trailing only slightly behind the U. of C.'s Hugo F. Sonnenschein and Northwestern's Henry S. Bienen.

Duff, who retired in August, did so well because the college boosted his pension payments as a goodbye present, college officials said.

"Even though he did retire in 2000, some of his retirement benefits were paid in 1999; that's the reason that figure is so high," said college spokeswoman Carol Bryant.
