Two proud neighborhoods are detailed in a new book, Chicago's Far
North Side: An Illustrated History of Rogers Park and West Ridge
(Chicago Historical Bookworks, $35). The book has about 230 photos
and illustrations.
"We have tried to take people into the bygone days," said Neal
Samors, a co-author. Many past and present residents are interviewed.
In 1836, Philip Rogers, the founder of Rogers Park, started buying
land from the government for farming at $1.25 per acre.
By the 1870s, there were about 50 houses scattered around Rogers
Park. "You had to memorize the places where sidewalks ended so you
wouldn't step into the mire," recalled an early resident in a
