Article: TV legend Steve Allen dead

Steve Allen-who left Chicago as a young man and went on to become the first host of TV's "Tonight Show" as well as something of a 20th century Renaissance man-has died at age 78.

A comedian, jazz pianist, novelist, poet, essayist, dramatist, actor, recording artist, political activist and philanthropist, Mr. Allen suffered an apparent heart attack Monday night at the suburban Los Angeles home of his youngest son, Bill.

"Sometimes," Steve Allen told the Chicago Daily News in 1967, "I think I'm a man with no profession and 12 sidelines."

Mr. Allen, who was married to actress Jayne Meadows, had a career as a star of TV, movies, stage and cabaret. He was credited with writing 40 books and more ...
