Ashore, 'Disbelief' After Shark Attack; Couple in Outer Banks Was From Oakton

As rescuer Kenny Brite cleared the sand dune Monday, the beach below was calm. A man lay just at the edge of the surf, two beachgoers rhythmically performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Back about 35 yards, a woman moaned quietly on the white sand. One swimmer gently caressed her hair and encouraged her to stay strong. Another leaned the weight of his body against a beach towel wrapped around the woman's ankle to stanch the rush of blood from her severed foot.
