Article: Electoral College doesn't need fixing

Today, the U.S. Congress will convene a joint session to
officially certify the count of the Electoral College that will make
George W. Bush the 43rd president of the United States. This historic
event-and the controversy surrounding the 2000 presidential election-
make this a fitting occasion to reflect on the role of the Electoral
College in our system of government. Two of my Illinois colleagues,
Sen. Richard Durbin and Rep. Ray LaHood, have introduced a
constitutional amendment to abolish that unique institution, and they
recently were joined in their efforts by Sen.-elect Hillary Clinton
of New York.
