Folk art beauty in the eye of the collector

Folk art is called "naive" and often rightly so. Since it became a fashionable collectible in the 1970s, a wide range of categories such as sculpture, painting and pottery-old and new-became classified as "folk art." You can spend a little or a lot. However, there are several things to consider before spending too much.

These days, age doesn't necessarily make an item worth thousands of dollars. Some pieces are obviously worth every penny, from hand- carved decoys to fancifully painted whirligigs. Other items are questionable, and you have to ask yourself, "Did someone's kid do it?"
