Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood should like the high strike zone that
baseball will enforce this season. So should White Sox leadoff man
Ray Durham.
Durham is a high-ball hitter and swung at a few of Wood's high
fastballs during a game last July 7 at Wrigley Field, but he laid off
one in the fifth inning that umpire Marty Foster called a ball. Had
it been called a strike, the outcome of that inning-and perhaps the
game-might have been different.
As it was, Durham was still alive on a 1-2 count with two outs,
Carlos Lee at third and the Cubs ahead 2-0. Durham eventually doubled
in the Sox' first run in a game they went on to win 4-2 in 12
innings.
