In his first bid for political office, state Comptroller Dan Hynes
got more than 1.8 million votes and led the state Democratic ticket.
At midterm, Hynes is pondering several options, including a
possible run for the governorship. It is more likely that he will
seek re-election as the state's chief fiscal officer. Partly because
of his youth, he's biding his time. The 32-year-old comptroller is
the youngest statewide executive officeholder in three decades.
With Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) leading next year's
Democratic ticket and heavily favored to win a second term, Hynes
would add similar strength to the bottom of their party's statewide
