Europe clamors for diesel engines

FRANKFURT Diesel engines in Europe have left their old black cloud of an image in the dust. No longer smelly and slow, they're now fresh, fast and among Europe's hottest-selling cars.

In fact, diesel engines have become a make-or-break ingredient for carmakers' success in Europe's increasingly tough auto market. European new passenger car registrations slumped more than 2 percent in 2000, and fell 4.9 percent in the first quarter of this year compared with the same period last year. However, sales for diesel- powered autos are surging.
