Spring reining at Hawthorne Careys upbeat about rare meet

What is so rare as a spring thoroughbred meet at Hawthorne?

Not much, in the memories and the seasonal rhythms of Chicago horseplayers. That's why Thomas Carey III and his take-a-new-look staff at the Stickney oval are hoping to hit the turf running this afternoon when their 31-day May-June session begins.

"There is no point in any further whining about the dates we received from the (Illinois) Racing Board," said Carey, 34, Hawthorne's director of operations. "Now we must embrace this meet as a tremendous opportunity to showcase the fact that Illinois has a second prime-time racetrack to complement Arlington."

Hawthorne's surprise spring came about last fall at the IRB's 2001 dates hearing. ...
