Article: Chenin Blanc wins praises, sweet or dry

Vouvray, in the middle of the Loire Valley, uses the grape Chenin Blanc. These wines can be made in one of two styles-semi-sweet (sweeter than a Chardonnay) or very dry.

They can be made in oak barrels, which can add wood or vanilla tastes to the wine, or in stainless steel barrels, which allows more fruit and mineral tastes to come to the forefront.

Chenin Blanc often has been used for blending in jug wines, to give them some power and pizzazz. Its acidity can help soften white wines that are too harsh. Chenin Blanc tends to bring more honeyed tastes to wines.

In the United States in recent years, Chenin Blanc has been sold as a single varietal or the dominant grape in a white wine blend.
