Peter Beinart [op-ed, Aug. 18] says that Cindy Sheehan, as the
parent of a dead soldier, "has so much moral authority precisely
because so few Americans . . . risk sharing her plight." On this
point, Beinart is totally wrong.
Sheehan has lost her son, and most people would feel some sympathy
for her because of this loss. But the death of her son does not
invest her with any particular moral authority. A person possesses
