It would be her first real contest.
In her brief political career, Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood has never
faced an opponent. She is about to go up against the state's most
popular Republican officeholder. It is a race she probably can't win.
Attorney General Jim Ryan, the front-runner for the GOP
gubernatorial nomination, has won tough primaries at the state and
county level. Three years ago, he won re-election with more than 2
million votes and led all candidates in both parties.
Wood, who served a single term in the Illinois House, faced no
opposition in the 1996 GOP primary or in the general election from
her North Shore legislative district. She was also unopposed in the
