Dear Dr. Fox:
My cat, China, has a very peculiar habit. He can be sleeping
soundly, but then awaken suddenly and start to clean himself. After
that, he goes right back to sleep! Sometimes he'll do this in the
middle of the night and shake our whole bed with his vigorous
cleaning.
Is this China's singular idiosyncrasy, or do all cats act this
way? Sometimes I think China must be dreaming, but then, I don't even
know for sure whether cats dream.

You can't believe how often I get your question about whether cats
and dogs dream! Yes, they do indeed dream and also have imaginations.
It's possible that when China has a bad dream, he awakens upset.
Or maybe, for some reason, ...
