Ordinary Paint, Extraordinary Painter; Jacob Lawrence's Powerful Palette

All his life, Jacob Lawrence painted a bit like a kid.

The great American artist used the same kind of paints you use in art class, not the fancy oil and acrylic paints most artists prefer. He worked hard on his paintings and they hang in famous museums, but you may find they look as familiar, clear and powerful as something you or a friend might make.

You can see a lot of Lawrence's paintings at the Phillips Collection at Dupont Circle. The exhibit "Over the Line: The Art and Life of Jacob Lawrence" is there until Aug. 19.

Even if you don't like art or museums, you may be surprised by this exhibit: Lawrence's paintings are very exciting to look at.

Why? Maybe because Lawrence never left ...
