UN, Annan share peace prize Nobel committee backs organization with 100th award

The United Nations and Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who has
described his role as "the job from hell," were jointly awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize Friday in recognition of their work for "a better
organized and more peaceful world."
Awarded as American planes bombed Afghanistan for the sixth day,
the prize was more a statement of hope than a symbol of success in
the UN's quest to end conflicts.
"The UN has in its history achieved many successes and suffered
many setbacks," the citation said. "Through this first peace prize to
the UN as such, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes in its centenary
year to proclaim that the only negotiable route to global peace and
