A South African diamond
The setting: Years ago Fort Hare was the only black university in
South Africa. Many of its alumni are now internationally famous -
Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo and Robert Mugabe. Today
the town of Alice is rundown with only one bookshop, and the
university, by its own admission, is "pretty neglected", but it does
boast a remarkable art gallery, De Beers Centenary Art Gallery.
What to see: More than 1,000 pieces of contemporary southern
African art, the most significant collection anywhere in South
Africa. It includes works by pioneers such as George Pemba and
