Article: On Ocean Floor, First Steps Taken To Salvage Japanese Fishing Vessel

In the waters off Honolulu, the Navy has begun preparing to raise a Japanese fishing vessel that sunk to depths of 2,000 feet with five sailors and four high school students on board after a U.S. submarine accidentally collided with it.

Last week, Navy officials sent a remotely operated submersible vehicle to the ocean floor nine miles south of Waikiki Beach to examine the wreckage of the Japanese trawler Ehime Maru and to start clearing fishing nets and other cargo debris from the area for the $40 million recovery operation. It is scheduled to begin later this summer.
