COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Matt Shaw, Southern Illinois' most consistent
offensive player, was sidelined by a sprained ankle.
Randal Falker, the Salukis' first-team all-conference big man,
was one game removed from a disastrous performance in the Missouri
Valley Conference championship game.
Jamaal Tatum, the MVC player of the year, was coming off one of
his poorest shooting efforts (2-for-9), against Holy Cross.
And guess what? The Salukis had Virginia Tech right where they
wanted it.
Combining its usual smothering defense with a season-high 12
three-pointers, SIU handled Virginia Tech 63-48 on Sunday to advance
to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament for the second time in six
