The House passed a bill (HR 7) to launch President Bush's faith-
based initiative by broadening the types of social services that
religious charities may deliver with taxpayers' money. It authorizes
federal grants for sectarian programs in areas such as domestic
violence, community development, hunger relief, drug treatment and
care for the elderly. Although the bill seeks to maintain the
constitutional divide between church and state and comply with anti-
bias laws, critics called it fatally flawed in that regard (next
issue).
A yes vote was to pass the bill.
