Article: African American Heritage Day Mixes Teaching and Fun

FAMILIES will be entertained by musicians, storytellers, dancing, drumming and games at Saturday's African American Heritage Day at the National Colonial Farm in Accokeek.

But don't call it a festival. At least not loud enough for its organizers to hear.

"This is not a festival!" insists Susan Proctor, director of education at the Accokeek Foundation, which administers the farm. In keeping with the site's year-round mission -- preserving the region's agricultural heritage and ensuring its future -- the organizers hope to create an event devoid of the funnel cake and souvenir T-shirt commercialism that has come to characterize summer festivals.
