FAMILIES will be entertained by musicians, storytellers, dancing,
drumming and games at Saturday's African American Heritage Day at the
National Colonial Farm in Accokeek.
But don't call it a festival. At least not loud enough for its
organizers to hear.
"This is not a festival!" insists Susan Proctor, director of
education at the Accokeek Foundation, which administers the farm. In
keeping with the site's year-round mission -- preserving the region's
agricultural heritage and ensuring its future -- the organizers hope
to create an event devoid of the funnel cake and souvenir T-shirt
commercialism that has come to characterize summer festivals.
