"BRITS find way out of dark ages" was how one newspaper had it.
The scene was Wimbledon last year, at the end of the first week,
and the British men for once were doing well. And it wasn't even a
one-man show; it wasn't just Jeremy Bates or John Lloyd flying the
flag. A group of Britons were embarking on one of the best
collective national tennis adventures in years.
The British had always been "brave" and "battling", the words
providing convenient alliterative headlines and summoning images of
gallant athletes succumbing in proud defeat. But at Wimbledon `93,
five Britons in the second round, two in the third and then one in
the last 16 suggested that the battlers had found a winning ...
