THERE have been leading articles, television programmes, and front- page tabloid headlines - and all over an internal crisis at a magazine.

The dramas that have erupted in recent weeks at Germany's leading weekly magazine, Der Spiegel - including the sudden sacking of the editor - are more than a storm in a media teacup. Der Spiegel may bounce back. This week's issue, [26 Dec] the first produced by the new editor, Stefan Aust, does not even refer to the bloodletting. But the identity crisis can be seen as reflecting a change of direction in German society itself.
