Raymond Barre, France's former centrist prime minister, said
yesterday that he might be a candidate in next year's presidential
elections.
His appeal to the centre, and even the left, would pose a serious
threat to the Gaullist contenders, Edouard Balladur and Jacques
Chirac, and he could step into the vacuum left by Jacques Delors, who
decided last week not to be the Socialist Party candidate.
Mr Barre's confirmation came in a week when Mr Balladur, the Prime
Minister, and Mr Chirac indulged in an almost comic competition to
demonstrate their social conscience over the housing of the homeless
in Paris before Christmas.
