In recent years scholars both here and in the United States have
suggested that in the late Fifties the Macmillan government
effectively duped the Americans into sharing the secrets of the
ultimate weapon by giving the false impression that British
scientists had already mastered the technology.
It is a remarkable claim, but given the secrecy that has
surrounded the British hydrogen weapon programme of that time - no
official history existed and few documents were declassified - it
has hitherto been impossible to test it.
