BIERTAN - Andreas Beer, perhaps after one too many of his
namesake, could no longer contain his grief. "We were born here and
belong here," he said. "Instead of running at the first
opportunity, we should have stayed and waited for things to
improve. Now it's too late. Too many have gone."
Behind him, a magnificent medieval church, within a fortified
wall, bore testimony to the craftsmanship of his forefathers: the
German Saxons who were settled in Transylvania by the Hungarian
King Geza II in 1141 to defend the area from marauding Turks and
Tartars.
Close by, a brass band, sizzling Bratwurst and men wearing green
felt hats were further signs of that heritage. It could have been
