Music and speech crackling over the airwaves seemed a miraculous phenomenon to a post-First-World-War generation, growing up in the 1920s. Stephen Williams, a preacher's son, shared this enthusiasm for the wonders of wireless. Early experiments with crystal sets led to a lifelong career in broadcasting and journalism. His greatest achievement was helping to set up Radio Luxembourg in 1933, which gave British listeners an exciting commercial alternative to the BBC; and it was he who was called on to make the final announcement on the station when it ceased broadcasting 58 years later.
