A draft performance audit of the Howard County school system
suggests that the school system could save $2.6 million over five
years. But a member of the community panel overseeing the report said
that the committee suspects that the consultants vastly overestimated
the savings.
According to committee and school system sources, members of the
panel did not challenge the contents of the audit's recommendations,
which, among other things, said the county schools are failing to
hold employees accountable for student performance. But committee
members found that the draft lacked sufficient explanation about
fiscal impact and failed to answer all their questions.
