"MORE than anything else," writes Sir Roy Strong in a book I
shall be discussing further down, "serious gardeners will read, and
accumulate a library." This explains the weight of garden-related
books published each year and is why many of us, even the
not-so-serious, will be rummaging in our Christmas stockings for a
volume to absorb and delight us during the enforced idleness of
winter.
One book stands out from this year's crop, although it would
need a gargantuan, structurally reinforced stocking to contain it.
Nicholas Barker's Hortus Eystettensis: the Bishop's Garden and
Bessler's Mag-nificent Book (The British Library, pounds 40) is one
of the most ravishing volumes I have come across.
