The New Zealand government yesterday unveiled a plan to spend
$NZ1bn ( pounds 400m) over 10 years to compensate Maoris for land
confiscated and bought compulsorily at rock bottom prices during
154 years of European colonisation.
Most of New Zealand is subject to claims by nearly 50 Maori
tribes, but they will actually get back little land. The government
ruled out the return of land now privately owned and national parks.
The government will use the money to buy surplus land, pay cash
compensation and donate other assets to tribes who can prove
historical claims. There will be no compulsion to settle, but
tribes that do so will have to renounce all future claims.
