Gilbert & Sullivan: HMS Pinafore Soloists, Orchestra and Chorus of
the Welsh National Opera / Sir Charles Mackerras (Telarc CD 80374)
Oh to have grown up with G & S of this calibre. Mackerras puts the
zest back into Sullivan's catchiest tunes, he sharpens the rhythmic
profile, excites the scoring, energising the strings, bringing
forward the charms and chortles of the woodwind, enjoying the healthy
crash of bass drum and cymbals. And just listen to the way he greets
the andante section of the overture (yes, this time Telarc have found
room for that, too), a shapely oboe taking great delight in the first
of the operetta's many lyric fancies.
Nor is G & S normally graced with so many "big ...
