Jacques Rogge, a doctor who performed surgery less than two weeks
ago, flew back to Belgium this morning with a different sort of
operation awaiting him. As the newly elected head of the
International Olympic Committee, Rogge officially assumes power
Thursday, meaning that, in addition to holding the highest title in
world sport, he formally inherits the IOC's sundry problems.
Considered long on character but short on big-business sense,
Rogge is seen as the perfect face of a reformed IOC, but perhaps
lacking in the business skills that marketing guru and third-place
candidate Dick Pound would have brought.
