THE Labour party is threatening to impose Vat on school fees in
a move that could cut support among middle-class voters. David
Blunkett, shadow education secretary, wants to end financial
privileges enjoyed by independent schools and redirect the money
into state education.
His plan was attacked last night by Gillian Shephard, the
education secretary, who accused Labour of practising "the politics
of envy". The private schools warned that Labour could increase
government costs by forcing privately educated pupils into the
state sector. Blunkett also risked alienating up to 1m parents with
