Dear Dr. Fox:
In one of your columns, a reader mentioned that her veterinarian
had prescribed a "potato-based diet." Recently I read a book by a
veterinarian who stated that the potato is "poison to a dog." Who is
right? When I gave my own dog a potato-based stew, she promptly
vomited the potato bits in it. I now carefully check ingredients in
my dog food. Please comment.

The potato is a highly nutritious vegetable that is not normally
poisonous to dogs. Many experienced veterinarians and animal
nutritionists recommend including potato in home-prepared dog food.
