8 Eta (Basque Homeland and Freedom), founded in 1960 by
university students, has been responsible for 815 deaths since
1968, including those of more than 20 senior national or local
political figures.
8 1961: first Eta action - attempt to derail a train which was
taking Francoist veterans to a rally in San Sebastian. Police
arrested and tortured more than 100 Eta suspects.
8 20 Dec 1973: assassination of Luis Carrero Blanco, prime
minister and Franco's designated successor, preceding collapse of
dictatorship.
8 October 1979: Jose Maria Uriarte Alvain, mayor of Bilbao,
killed.
8 1980: Eta's bloodiest year - 118 people killed.
