Benito Mussolini, Il Duce, the deposed Italian dictator, is
captured by Italian partisans at Dongo near Lake Como, writes James
Cusick.
The partisans around Como are mostly Communist-controlled. They
stop a convoy of German trucks and Italian Republican soldiers,
claiming to be going to Trieste to fight the Slavs. In one of the
convoy trucks, with a blanket pulled up over his shoulders and
sheltering his face under a German helmet, is Mussolini. He is in
the region with his mistress, Clara Petacci, waiting for 3,000
Black Shirts - his hard-core supporters - to join him.
