Article: Lord Rothschild defends Churchill archive purchase

The Heritage Lottery Fund did not buy the copyright to the Churchill archive because it would have driven up the price, Lord Rothschild, the fund's chairman, said yesterday.

He spoke out as the row continued over the purchase of the archive from Winston Churchill, Tory MP for Davyhulme and Sir Winston's grandson, with pounds 12.5m of lottery money.

Lord Rothschild said the collection had been valued at more than pounds 30m excluding copyright, pounds 10m of which was for the state papers which were, until then, the subject of legal dispute over whether the Churchill family or the Crown owned them.
