Former Cabinet ministers who served under Margaret Thatcher and
John Major hold a total of 125 directorships and 30 consultancies,
according to a new analysis published yesterday.
The study, by Labour Research, the trade-union backed research
body, found that of the 40 ex-Cabinet ministers still alive from
the Thatcher and Major governments, 31 held business jobs.
With the Nolan inquiry into standards in public life due to
report in the next week or so, the research - the most
comprehensive to date - adds weight to Opposition demands that
ex-ministers should face restrictions on their commercial
interests.
Nolan is likely to recommend a two-year wait for ministers
wishing to join industrial ...
