Article: London symphony orchestras to merge

Plans were announced last night for the merger of two of London's symphony orchestras, the London Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic.

The merger will be in the first instance only at the administrative level, entailing a number of redundancies, but sources in both orchestras confirmed it was a precursor to an eventual merger on the playing side, perhaps within six months. No musicians would be made redundant: a super orchestra would be based in London, and a separate one might tour.
