Article: Brent Spar falls to boarding party

Greenpeace yesterday pledged that its campaign to prevent the Brent Spar being dumped at sea would continue despite the fact that Shell were back in control of the rig.

The final phase came when leader Jon Castle, 44, was forced out of his hiding place in one of the bottom levels of the disused Brent Spar. A team of men used hammers and chisels to cut their way through a bulkhead to get to him.

Mr Castle was skipper of the Greenpeace vessel the Rainbow Warrior in the mid-1980s when it was blown up by French secret agents in Auckland harbour, in New Zealand, killing a photographer on board.
